Last year Cairo Monje found himself picking oranges on a farm near Fresno, California. Later in 2014, during the mid-August through October almond season, Monje drives a “sweeper,” collecting fallen nuts after they’ve been shaken to the ground. But it was too early for almonds and Monje needed to make money to support his wife and three daughters back in Mexico, so he took the best job he could find — picking oranges. The orchard owner required Monje and the other pickers to work long hours in extreme heat.
