The 2014 ChangeMakers Award recognizes Mayor Garcetti and First Lady Wakeland’s active commitment to end modern slavery. Mayor Garcetti and First Lady Wakeland have served on CAST’s honorary board for more than a decade. The mayor’s focus on pathways of economic empowerment for diverse citizens in Los Angeles’ tourism industry strongly aligns with CAST’s initiatives to provide survivors of human trafficking with the skills and training needed for stable, living wage jobs in the hospitality industry.

Strong advocates for women in leadership, the mayor and first lady have generously supported CAST’s survivor leadership program through the Liberty Hill Foundation. The survivor leadership program is over 80% women and has led to groundbreaking survivor advocacy, networking and mentoring. The mayor’s commitment to women in leadership is underscored by the fact that more than 50% of his current commission appointments are women. CAST salutes Mayor Eric Garcetti and First Lady Amy Elaine Wakeland for their work to make Los Angeles a slavery-free zone where women can thrive.
