California State Bill 516: Regulations of Foreign Labor Contractors to Prevent Forced Labor and Human Trafficking passed unopposed with bi-partisan support through the California Senate and is now moving to Assembly floor for a vote.

However, SB 516 is also facing increasing opposition from business associations. Unfortunately, legitimate businesses may unknowingly engage with unscrupulous recruiters. These recruiters need to be regulated to protect everyone’s best interests. CAST and victim services providers across the state are finding that one of the few ways we can prevent modern day slavery is by targeting the false promises and fraudulent practices of foreign labor recruiters.

You can make a difference by calling your California Assembly member to ask him/her to support SB 516. Calls should be made starting September 3, 2013 until Sept 10th 2013.
